The original idea for creating a compass or mission statement came from Covey's book The 7 habits of Highly Effective Families. I read it back in the mid-nineties. I've had one pretty much through the years. This past 6-8 months has been better, but before that (starting about 2 years ago) I had many events such as job loss, bankruptcy, loss of house, car, on-going unemployment, approval of SSDI and pretty much the life I knew was gone which that really shook me to the core.
About 6 months ago as part of this group I'm in we were asked to create our mission statments. I felt really lost and recreating my compass from the point I was at now was hard but has been the support to me that I once new. They had a booklet of questions to answer about what is important to me now. It was a difficult process. We did a Personal Values card sort then and I went through it again today. It is a nice way to see if something becomes more/less important.
The card sort is a really easy way to go...here's the link
http://motivationalinterview.net/lib...escardsort.pdf All you need to do is just print and cut them into the small squares, divide them into an order of importance...from their you can just narrow it down and create your own...etc...
Good luck!
