I often have wondered this too, why can't the people in need get help without an organized public display, or spectacle. Do some cancer patients feel like we invalidate their pain of hair loss by people shaving our heads to raise money, almost as if saying being bald is no big deal? I know that's not the intention, but I've wondered how that might feel if I had cancer.
