Ah Green... it's a good question. I know the predicament that you're in. It is kind to help your friends during a situation like that, but the fact is that if you're not a trained in suicide prevention, then you're not the right person to be giving help. Plus, the trauma it causes you isn't fair to YOU.
But I know the panicky feeling of being in that situation. With my husband, I had the phone number of a mental health mobile crisis service at the ready, and I told him that I would not hesitate to call them if I thought he could be suicidal. You could talk to your friend and offer to call them on his/her behalf.
Here are some resources you can give to your friend:
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)
Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)
Suicide & Crisis Hotline 1-800-999-9999
National Adolescent Suicide Hotline 1-800-621-4000
The Trevor Helpline (specializing in gay and lesbian youth suicide prevention) 1-800-850-8078
