I'm a great admirer of Marsha Linehan who developed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) - mainly to help suicidal people with borderline personality disorder.
She recently revealed that she is diagnosed with mental illness herself, including being diagnosed with schizophrenia and given thorazine and ECT. Here's an article about her experiences:

Reminds me of Pat Deegan who says her survivor mission was to reform the mental health system.
