You can go online and look for psychologists /psychiatrists in your area, plus you can check on their background, i.e. where they got their degree, how long they've been practicing, if there are any complaints against them.
You can also interview them before actually starting therapy. If they seem to "click" with you, then you can begin seeing them. Obviously it's important that you have a good rapport with them.
Since I didn't care who knew, I also used "word of mouth" but that isn't "ok" with everyone.
