I am so opposed to prescribing antipsychotics to young children. The modern A-typicals all have hormonal side effects that I would not like to see inflicted on developing children. These are serious heavy duty drugs with potentially major side effects, with increased risks the longer you're on them. I reluctantly take an anti-psychotic because it seems to be a critical adjunct to my anti-D treatment, but I'm fully informed of the benefits and the risks and I'm making an informed choice to take it.
It seems to me like antipsychotics are being prescribed more and more for off - label uses and to populations where no research has been conducted.
I don't have kids, so I can't really judge any parent for the choices they make for their children, but I'd always go for a behavioural intervention before drugs.
