First it started at the grocery store near where I live and then
local eatery so I moved away from that area, now it is
at the beach - since I started walking program they try to

Maybe sometimes others / family , think it is there purpose to console . Or maybe they want to share memories, that they not have. And then there is the other times when people think sharing their losses with someone gives validation to the one they are speaking to.
Personally, from what I know and have read, those that share their own losses when being consilatory /sp/ , kind of think they have some magical answer to another ones loss. So I won't presume such.
I would only Hope that what your relatives are trying to express, is care. Although awkward as it may seem.
With time, may your burden be lightened, and the loss, relinquish to Love.
