Disclaimer #1 I'm not a great driver, and I do recognize that the situation is entirely my fault, but I still think i'm getting screwed.

I had a perfectly clean driving record for 20 years until 2008 when I got into 2 minor accidents that were both the result of me being hung over. Not proud of that. 2010 I hit an ice patch lost control over my car and spun into a guardrail, again I was hungover. 3 Accidents and your car insurance jumps huge - it went from 3 - 7,000. Then summer 2010 I had another accident again driving when hung over, I was probably technically still drunk, but no DUI. 4 accidents and you're an at risk driver and the only way to get insurance is through facility. My premium jumped to 13K. Ok fair enough.

Then this month, I had another accident. No hangover or alcohol involved this time thank God - I've been sober over 5 months, but my insurance company cancelled on me on a technicality. They said they'd never recieved a letter from my insurance broker saying i'd been denied conventional coverage. So I'm SOL.

I called a new broker today who specializes in high risk drivers. I can still get insurance but my premium will now go up to 18K. It's crazy that's 3 times what my car's worth. What makes it more annoying is if I don't get collision coverage, which means that if I'm in an at fault accident they won't pay for repairs, and my premium would only be $1,000 lower.

I get that I should have to pay higher insurance premiums because I've got a lousy driving record, but this is getting absurd. Plus I have to come up with a $3k deposit.

Just venting.
