t said something last session about me being "tough as nails" and then when i said it back, it was like he got perturbed. and to me, he yelled "I was just joking".... it just didn't feel like a joke to me

when my kids were little and playing and one would get his feelings hurt, I would try to explain to both of them, "it isn't a joke unless two people are laughing".... meaning we shouldn't make a joke at someone elses expense.
