What a horrible experience!!! I can understand your reluctance to go back to a shelter!!! Places like that shouldn't be allowed to sink to that level -- where is the Health Dept?? 
Are there no friends who could help you for awhile? If they knew of Nick's abuse, it seems like they'd be willing. Gosh, I wish I had some answers for you. Getting assistance is so darn difficult in this country --- we help everyone else all over the world, but forget our own people!! 
In Michigan, people can get assistance with housing -- the state pays the rent for awhile as well as the utilities -- then after that, it's up to you. My son was in this "program" and lives in a newer apartment. You might check with Social Services to see if there is anything available like that in your area. There could even be help with child-care. You've probably already checked into everything -- but thought I'd mention it anyway. 
I wish you the very best -- you must feel like you're in prison.  Just don't give your "power" away to him -- take it BACK. Don't buy into the things he says -- he's WRONG. God bless & please keep us posted on how you're doing. Hugs, Lee
