I deal with racing thoughts all night long. If I go to bed to early, before I am very tired, they start running from the moment I lay down (if not sooner). They will keep me up for hours if I can't get them stopped. If the thoughts have started I try to do guided relaxation exercises, I start counting, I sit up in bed and look around, or I get out of bed for a short time just to interrupt the racing thoughts. If I get up I won't go back to bed until I am sleepy since I know that is the only way I will fall asleep. I try to sleep late in the mornings if I can to help catch up on the sleep I am losing during the night.
