Let's take these in reverse order.

Both of your replies do show up here so you must've done
something right.

What did you see that suggested that one of your posts might not have gone through? Well, I can think of one possibility: if it was one of your first few posts and you were still in moderation, you might not have been able to see it till someone from my team had read and approved it. Do you think it was that, or something else?

When I reply to your post? I'm thinking you mean, when you
read my reply and are getting ready to reply
to it. At the bottom of my reply, over on the right, do you see something that looks like this?
Those are what I'm calling "buttons". The first one (that says "Reply"), if you clicked on it, would quote my post in the box where you'd then type your reply. I'm guessing it was what you used (because there I am, quoted!

) and the box that you typed in must've been the right one (because what you typed did turn into a post).
The third "button" (with the quill pen) would just take you to a blank text box where anything that was going to appear in your reply, you'd have to type in yourself. That text box, called "Quick Reply", is probably already at the bottom of the page where you're reading this. You can either click on the quill-pen thing and get taken right to it, or scroll down to it yourself.
Assuming that you used the "Reply" [with quote] button, you would've seen a white text box (bigger that the "Quick Reply" one) with some text (from my post) already in it, some editing controls above it, about 15 smilies (and a "More" link) over at the right, and an assortment of "Post Icons" below. I don't usually bother with icons on what I post but I'll put the

one on this reply just to show you how post icons work. The only post icon with a special meaning is the "trigger" ("trig" for short):

Here are some
instructions for using it.

Also, is there a reason why my profile pic is not showing up on people's profiles when I post.

You've probably figured that one out already. Your profile pic (the fairy standing on the crescent moon) only shows up on your profile. It's your avatar (the terrier) that shows up next to everything you post. Could it be that you hadn't chosen an avatar yet when you asked that question?
So far it looks to me like you're learning your way around this site better than you think you are.
