I heard somewhere that some people become conditioned to a life of turmoil and sadness and then feel weirded out when they experience something joyful because it is so foreign to them. You might try setting aside the idea that some emotions are 'negative' and instead embrace the idea that all emotions have value in keeping us alive and human, and are appropriate to experience based on the situation, i.e.. crying at something sad and smiling at something happy.
