I live in Manhattan, about 2 miles north of Ground Zero. I'm a native NYer and was home the day of the attacks; fortunately, I did not work downtown. I lost two neighbors in the attack and know a few others who managed to escape from the Towers - one just barely doing so.
I've watched some of the 9-11 commemorative specials on TV and have turned off others. They are just too much. I managed to go to two church services (for different religions!) yesterday to help me deal with the issues raised by the anniversary. It helped a lot to not deal with it alone. And, both services had wise words spoken that were very helpful. The second service was full of firemen. (It was the home church of Father Mychal Judge.) Though the church was so full that I had to stand for the entire service, I was so glad to have experienced it.
Here in NYC, citizens ride mass transit all the time. So far, since the attacks, it has been safe. But still, as a good citizen, I am cautious. I noted that security was heightened yesterday. There were soldiers in some locations with guns in their hands for the safety of citizens. Still, though, I was vigilant. I wanted to go the drugstore but it was located in the Empire State Building - clearly a target if there is one. I chose another location as a precaution.
I don't know you well enough to comment on your dreams. Still, you have to look at the facts. The USA has not suffered terrorist attacks on public transportation. And, attacks on public transportation in other nations has been in large cities. I think you're a lot safer in New Mexico that I am here in New York City. And, I still ride public transportation as do thousands of others here on a daily basis. Have you see a therapist about your 9-11 triggers? I hope you got through the anniversary okay.
