I felt guilty for speaking up (politely though passionately) and because he acted angry at me before when he stormed off - so you are right it's unfounded. Saving him... interesting thought... and you're right can't be done but I didn't realize I wanted to save him. There is this huge soft spot for him, an empathy that wants to take away all the pain he has suffered...
