I keep asking myself the same thing. It's the nature of the disease. I am trying to learn distractions - new interests and activities that will distract my mind from its preoccupations. Shopping helps. I try to shop slowly to give myself the maximum freedom from those other thoughts. And, I try to only buy needed things. So, I focus on looking more than buying. Reading helps too. I like to learn so I try to focus on educational things. Sometimes exercise helps but even then my mind can wander into past memories. My PTSD is not combat related but everyday is a battle in my mind. I am trying to out smart it rather than fight it, if you know what I mean. Learn to like fostered distractions to keep your mind from returning to painful thoughts. All the best to you!
