You don't have to take birth control for irregular periods. It's OK for them to be irregular. The only time you'd run into issues would be if you were trying to get pregnant it might be harder. There are non hormonal methods like the paragard IUD and Natural Family Planning. I cannot tolerate hormones, I've had irregular periods for years so I don't use hormonal birth control. My husband and I practice Natural Family planning. I recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility if you're interested in it.
