Sounds sort of like the relationship I had with my mother. She was never that outspoken, but same deal.

I'm sorry to say this, but even my moving out of the house this September into residence at university hasn't made anything any better. She's not going to change, she's my mother. *sigh*

Have you tried talking with her and explaining if she doesn't have anything nice to say she just shouldn't say anything at all? Maybe she thinks she's doing you a favour, by making you 'tough' to deal with the 'real world'. Sometimes (and please forgive me parents on the board) parents are oblivious to the pain they cause their children.
