If you get stuck with a longer period of time off, maybe volunteer work would be a good way to keep busy?

Many nonprofit organizations can use office help as well as more typical volunteer jobs like tutoring, spending time with the elderly, assembling mailings, being a docent at a zoo/aquarium/museum, ushering for live theater performances (you get a comp ticket if you do that!) etc. Depending on your skills, availability, and organizations in your area, there are usually lots of options. I mentioned office help because if you have some skills in that area, then it's the kind of thing that isn't usually very involved to get started on, while things like tutoring often require training that's only offered periodically. There are also an increasing number of online volunteer opportunities, but sometimes it's nice to get out of the house and have a little social interaction.

(Can you tell that I was a volunteer coordinator in a previous life? )
Thanks for this!
