If I call anything "monstrous" it tend to be behaviour rather than a person. As to what I was told, "Just do something! Stop sitting around feeling sorry for yourself."
Thanks mom. Fortunately, she has learned some about what not to say, though she still lapses into unhelpful sayings at times.
