One of the worst things about classic bipolar is that when a person begins a manic episode they feel really, really good, so they don't take their meds; nothing's wrong, they feel great, they don't want to feel bad again. Unfortunately, that's not the way things work out.
Pat's advice is great...read as much as you can about BP...there's tons of stuff online and at your library. if you need to vent or ask questions here, feel free...we're here to help!
