That's a pretty powerful realization you have made there that when you look back, you always have made it. That saying about not being given more than you can take can feel invalidating, but I feel it can be understood in different ways. I don't think it means that you won't be hurt or damaged by the terrible things that you endure. We're all here because we were hurt, and it isn't okay that those things happened or were done. But we do have tools that help us to get through it. Dissociation is one of those tools.
The way I understand that saying is that we are strong enough to come through those experiences, even if it kills us, and we are still who we are. We are not utterly destroyed. We don't lose our agency. We still have the power to be good people and to work towards improving our lives. The pain may seem more than we can bear, but when we look back, we must have made it through because we are still here and we are still ourselves and we can still make good choices.
