I find that the biggest enemy really is inactivity. If you can push, prod, cajole yourself to do something, anything constructive during a depression, sometimes a little thing you start to do every day can lead you out of it. How healthy are you, are you eating right? Start taking a walk WHEN you feel poorly; leave the ipod home, leave everything distracting alone and just walk with your thoughts. Distractions like the computer, texting, etc. are awful for working on yourself. Just be with you, without any "filters."
It can also be something creative-a journal, a drawing, a poem, a collage, a song-or it can be something useful in other ways-cleaning, reorganizing, helping a neighbor. They do say, if you can't help yourself, help someone else. Helping a friend in even a small way may bring you some measure of relief from your own thoughts which are imprisoning you. It will get you thinking about others and out of your own head, even if it may seem counter-intuitive to focus on someone else's problem or needs. Ultimately, you will feel good about your generosity and those good feelings may jumpstart positive feelings about your own situation. It's easy for us to tell you to "lose the bf" but if you find that he is bringing you down, perhaps a break from him might do you good. Despite the societal norm, it is often good to be alone with yourself from time to time. Good luck.
