Speaking for myself, I would not want to see anyone but a licensed professional. My most helpful professional has not been any of the PhD's I have seen but the Licensed Mental Health Counselor/MSW that I currently am seeing. She could retire if she wished, but she loves her profession and continues training and education just because she enjoys it so much. This is psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapy and the most helpful of the therapies I've been in before, particularly CBT therapies. Others are helped by those therapies, but I was not.
The experience you describe with the group sounds very bizarre. I'm sorry that your experiences haven't been helpful. I think there is excellent help out there and I hope you find the best for you.
