I agree completely with your analysis of people pleasing and I'm so sorry that you had to learn about the subject in such a hard way.

So many people bring their anger home with them, and I have known it with women as well as men I'm sad to say. I do think it is rare in women, but I'm no expert. Maybe it comes out differently.

If we can assert ourselves, even a little, the feelgood factor kicks in, but if we fail to assert ourselves over a long period of time, the feelbad factor can destroy us and hurt everyone around us.

A heavy subject, but important.
