He seems a bit insensitive, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Could be he's overworked or pressed by something going on at home or a combo & is just a bit overwhelmed. We all have these periods, and social priorities have a way of getting pushed to the back without our being particularly conscious of it.

I think your instinct to back off a month or so is a good one. I also think you've got it all pretty together in your analysis of the situation. The guy just seems to need space at the moment, but not from you in particular.
