Believe it or not, there was also sort of a subtext, economic rationale for the DST extension. President Bush thought that if people had more daylight hours after the workday, they would be more apt to stay active and go shopping after work.

Not everyone likes the new change. I personally love it. Yes, it's pretty dark in the mornings come the end of October, but to have the later daylight hours in March is really a welcome sight after a long, dark, northern winter. I know Australia also changes their clocks, so I don't think it's just a northern thing.
