As to yesterday's messages, I may perhaps have the wrong understanding of what happens with moderated messages. I had been under the impression that the recipient does not see moderated messages until they're approved. And that has not been my experience. Not only did yesterday's "moderated" messages appear on my profile page at least eight hours before the "Your Notifications" changed, but today I still have as of this moment a "Your Notifications" message telling me about profile messages I received and read yesterday. Perhaps I'm just confused. But in the past all notices about profile messages disappeared when I read them.
