The social group forums and the social groups are all public unless the group has specifically been set up as a private group by invitation only, then the group itself can be read (in the social groups area) but its forum is private. For example, the Christian Women's social group is public as is its forum. The Those in Therapy Book Club is an invite only group. You can access and read the group even though it is private, but you cannot see or access its associated forum.
