I'd have to say that the eerie thing here isn't so much the image as a whole; when I first got a glance at it I thought they were scales and wasn't repelled. But when one looks closer and sees the plastic-like holes and the strange things embedded in her skin, coupled with her happiness for the strange mutation, I believe the brain is simply wired to be afraid of something that not only looks painful but just plain unnatural.
