Glad you reported it; it sounded like a weird and creepy thing to have happen!
My city isn't that big (about 150K in the city + 660K in metro area) but I think I feel safer in the city because there are a lot more people around. So if anything went wrong, there's a better chance that there would be someone who could help. I walk through an enormous cemetery between my house and campus, even at night, by myself. A lot of people seem to think that's scary. I don't see it that way - the cemetery is beautiful and peaceful (it's a Victorian-era "designed landscape") and I know the terrain very well - plus there are always people walking their dogs or students passing through to the apartment building at the end of my street. Actually, the police are the most dangerous thing in the cemetery because they tear through the curvy, hilly roads at high speeds for no apparent reason.
I don't feel safe walking a couple blocks from my house alone at night in the wrong direction, but I think any sizable city has areas that are best avoided under those conditions, and it's usually not a big deal.
