I thought I subscribed to a thread like this, but I can't find it. At least I found this one by doing a search!
I HATE the "How are you?" Yeah, I know it's just a greeting, and people aren't REALLY asking you how are you. Then, they expect the canned, trite response, "Oh, I'm fine. How are you?" I think it's so phony. Why can't people just say hi, hello, good morning, whatever? I esp. hate it when people are WAITING for me to say, "Oh, I'm great." They'll repeat it, "HOW ARE YOU?"
They know I'm not really asking them how they are, but they'll respond, "Great, thank you." They may not be great! I'm not great!
I get this all the time from people I don't even know: Checkers at the store, the guy at the front desk in the gym, the salesperson hovering at the door of the store, the receptionist at the doctor's office, etc.

Not so bad coming from someone who is REALLY asking and really wants to know, but that's rare. And I'd rather they choose different words. It's an overused phrase.

Yeah, I feel strongly about it as you see......
