I thought the first miniseries was relatively awesome, the sequel miniseries was very good too (reminded me of "empire strikes back" in some ways) but the weekly tv series started to fall apart. too many compromises, i think, in order to "undo" the ending of the second miniseries in order to keep the plot going for weekly.

it was cool that the original mini was an allegory for wwII... if you remember there was an actress who died while the miniseries was being made, the daughter of the novelist dominick dunne... and i heard that the original plan was to have the whole story told from her point of view, in the style of "the diary of anne frank". when she died they had to rearrange the plan but still kept the overall allegorical elements. i remember at least a few scenes that reminded me of "the sound of music" in that regard.
