You are so right bottling your emotions can be so destructive, I hope you are able to get those feelings out.
Something that has worked for me in the past is to write what I am feeling down, even if I don't let anyone read my words it helps me to work through them. It sounds like you really care for this person, sorry you have to be separated from them.
