yes I was. years ago (DID) was not recognized in the DSM (Diagnositic Statistical Manual - the professionals bible so to speak for what the criteria for each mental disorder is for a person to be diagnosed with that disorder) So instead of finding out what kind of voices I hear - inside the head and can be traced back to my abuse history and medication does not work on a - when professionals heard the words "yes I hear voices" they automatically assumed with out doing a comprehensive psychological testing with me that I was schizophrenic. Many of us that grew up in the 1960's and 70's were most likely diagnosed incorrectly due to there were little to no testing procedures for Dissociative Identity Disorder.
Now thanks to the DES, DDIS and other dissoicative disorders testing procedures anyone that goes through those battery of tests end up being correctly diagnosed with DID (or without it correctly if they do not have it)
