There are 4 ways of treating shattering of the calcaneus bone.
1) so called "functional treatment, not suitable unless the break is simple, mine isn't, it's in 5 pieces.
2) fusion of the ankle, causing talar arthritis & a permament disability
3) reconstruction, using screws & plates. This might work, but it's the NHS's decision whether to offer it or not.
4) bone grafts. There is no hope of me getting this as a public patient. It seems from the research that this would probably work best.

All these treatments are notorious for their failure rate, as the calcaneus bone does not have a very good blood supply.

Anyway, we go back to the nasty surgeon on May 10th, & if he orders the surgery we will be gone for at least 3 weeks.

We can't imagine how we can spend 3 weeks in hospital without dissing out, it's too long. We were having trouble after 3 or 4 days.
