Simply put, if life is a constant episode of chaotic behavior, if the patient is unable to maintain employment, is often the center of dramatic upheavals regarding interpersonal relationships ( or drama with everything else), if the patient can't maintain some semblance of romantic relationships or friendships and is always struggling with co-workers and employers, then a psychiatrist is going to label this a personality disorder.

From what I have read, I gather that if you are going along okay in life and hit a bump, up and/or down, but then recover when it's over, that's bipolar, but if you never seem to get your feet under you and there's no rest for the weary, then that's a personality disorder.
