Changing therapists or beginning with a new one is always a scary thing because you don't know what to expect. A few things I have found that get me through the first few sessions:
- Most therapists are there to help and are not out to make you miserable.
- It's okay to dislike the first session, as it often is the therapist getting a lot of background information on you.
- You may be asked to fill out paperwork. It's okay, even normal, to not have all the answers.
- Even though your mom is making you go, it is a good opportunity to learn more about yourself. This will help you in the long run.
- If, after several sessions, you find you really don't like the therapist (it happens) speak up! Have your school counselor recommend another. Don't give up on therapy just because you have a personality conflict with the therapist.
- Remind yourself as many times as you need to that this person is there to help. It's not going to be a disaster. In fact, you may find that you like having someone to talk to on a regular basis.

Meanwhile, just hang in there until it's time to start. Then come back and tell us how it's going.
