12 step programs are great not just for people with issues and addictions but as a way of looking at your life and seeing what is going on and how can you address situations in a way that will make you feel better and those around you. Its more of a program of "fixing you". throgh my experience with 12 steps i learned that i had to change my way of thinking and interacting with people because they certianly wernt going to change and once i did that my relationships began to change for the better. I also learned to accept responsibility for me, if i did something wrong i had to learn from it and grow. And the highr power thing doesnt have to be god, it can be a lamp post or a door knob or anything you want it to be, i know a lot of athiests in 12 step programs that just name their highr power fred and substitute that whereever the word god is mentined. its your final decision but they have helped me immensly. good luck.
