I think I may be a bit controversial when I saw this, but I think it's a wonderful thing you've done for yourself.
I believe that the U.S.'s model to treat those who are 'mentally ill' are not looking at it in a way that is conductive to the patients. Taking a minimum amount of medication should always be the goal of the patient, and psychiatrists owe it to the patient to help them understand what the hell they are putting in their bodies. (Which won't happen in the 15~ minutes you typically see a psychiatrist.) Helplessness is breed in the system, too. For some patients they finally become their own advocate, but for the majority it never happens.
I'm not saying medication is bad (I take medication), but the whole system is so messed up that I understand why would opt to get out of it and I'm glad you're finally feeling like yourself again.
