Elaine, I'm an over eater, mostly due to boredom or stress or loneliness. I found that reading labels and keeping track of how much I'm eating every day really helps. When I eat a "normal" amount of food for me - about 1200 calories give or take depending on activity levels - and compared it to how much I would eat when I didn't pay attention, it's no wonder I packed on 20 pounds in no time
Accountability, even just to myself, is the best thing I've found for me. I've slipped some the last few weeks and I can feel the weight creeping back on. I just don't feel as healthy anymore.
