re your second question re the smilies in chat, this was raised a while ago and this is the answer doc john gave (sorry didn't know how to make it look like a quote):

"If you refresh your browser and/or clear its cache, you'll see the old ones back. This happens whenever we restart the chat software and we apologize for the inconvenience."

I cleared my cache and reopened the browser and the really horrible smilies changed back to the old type. If you're not sure how to do this on your computer, you may need to tell people what operating system and browser type you're using and someone may be able to put up instructions for you.
