Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant and mood stabiliser, however it does have anti-depressant properties. It is regarded as being the most antidepressant of the mood stabilisers and as with all antidepressants it can cause mania in some people, though less so than other antidepressants (because it is also a mood stabiliser) which is why it is used so often in people with bipolar.
