a very long, long time ago, i had the mother in law from hell also. i had a toddler and was pregnant with our second child. this woman never lifted a hand to help me do anything but was always ready to tell me what she thought. i waddled to the church one day and talked to our beloved priest. he told me to say this, "you may be right" and then walk off. she almost lost her mind over that. you aren't agreeing and you're walking away from the argument. in fact, you didn't even argue.
you have a much, much worse situation than i did. at least mine didn't live in my house. you've gotten really good advice and i say that it's time to give her her walking papers.
and for those nosy questions that people ask..Ann Landers taught me this. they say, "why are you eating that ice cream?" and you say, "why do you ask?" that ends it or they pass out from embarrassment.
good luck and get moving on getting her out of there. love, pat
