He can receive therapy with no meds I am sure, therapists don't prescribe meds. However if he is all over the place, maybe some meds would be a good place to start. Bipolar can be extremely hard to get under control. It's not as if, if he went the med route to start that it would have to be for life. Meds could help him get to a place of stability so he could actually figure out his patterns, triggers, routine, ect. Pretty important stuff if you want to get the Bipolar under some type of control.
