I've always been interested in psychology though I was ignorant when I saw my first T. Somewhere along the way she said that she did psychodynamic therapy. So did the next T, and she told me that at the first session. The T after that liked CBT but I didn't, so we did a bit of everything! Then came my T who said she was closest to family systems therapy and behavioral techniques, anything BUT psychodynamic. I asked her; she didn't volunteer the information. I didn't ask her right away and I wish I had.

My current T had IFS listed on her website and the PsychologyToday website, so I asked her about it. She was just learning EMDR so of course she told me that too.

I think anyone who doesn't know what type of therapy their T does, should ask. With my former T, I wanted to talk about my past but she didn't want to "go there", and I was frustrated. I didn't know ahead of time what her orientation was. It's good to do some research if you're looking for a T or switching, to know what kind you're looking for, if you have the option of choosing.
