This would also happen to me. It is basically the brains process of storing things into the long term and short term memory process. When a person sleeps many elements of that persons experiences get played and mishmashed together. When a person is not sleeping it still happens. The brain takes the bodys relaxing at bedtime as a cue to start the dream processing and events replay and mishmash.
How I took care of it -
I wear headphones and listen to relaxation type tapes and music. While listening to that my brain is basically being told I am "not sleeping" so it doesn't start the sleeping store the memory processes yet. While I am listening to the relaxation stuff I am also doing progressive relation of relaxing all my body. I soon fall asleep without the running comentary/movie playing but with my relaxation visualization of the music and progressive relaxation and wake up feeling like I got sleep that night.
