I take it to mean that if you're constantly insisting on being a victim and not taking responsibility for your own actions, you won't be happy. Being happy is a CHOICE.
(Yeah yeah, I have chronic major depression and have since I was 13, OK? I'm 41. I don't need to know it's a biological illness, blah blah blah.)
BUT, in spite of the illness, you still have the POWER to CHOOSE how you look at things, to CHOOSE what direction you will go in. Material goods won't make you happy. Each individual person is responsible, ultimately, only for his or her own self -- other people can't and won't and shouldn't be responsible for making you happy. YOU choose actively to find ways to heal, to learn how to look for the positives in a situation instead of always heading straight for the pile of crap.
