If the government could brain-wash me into becoming a conforming, conservative careerist like the others, I might not "mind" it so much. If I knew it would take away the fear, I'd be a willing participant.

The human mind has a tendency to take in and accept information, however false or obsurd, just to have something for it to accept as "truth." It can be quite a comforting experience for some.
