I'm here and far more cheerful than I've been over the last week or two.

Thanks. Luckily I have a sister who's an alcoholic. (Ha! I wonder if
that sentence has ever been uttered before!) She's been sober a couple of years now. He seems to realize there's a problem, and he called her for advice.
I can see so many angles to this. On the one hand he needs friends. But this friend will always be a drinking buddy. So if he wants to hold on to this friend, he probably won't quit drinking.
Also he swore up and down that he wouldn't drink, but I knew he would. Maybe he really believed he could go hang out with his alcoholic friend in a bar and not drink. My problem isn't alcohol; it's sugar. And I'm very familiar with this form of self-delusion. Yes, I'm going to go to the buffet, but I'm
not going to have the dessert. Ha! I'm going to have the dessert, and a little part of me
knows it even as I'm lying to myself. I might as well tell the truth to myself. If I want to avoid the dessert, I need to avoid the buffet. So when he left the house saying he wasn't going to drink, I figured he was going to drink. And when he came back drunk, I wasn't surprised.
Also I'm glad he didn't drive after drinking. He has a DUI hanging over him. He was picked up for driving drunk in October 2010, right before his last and biggest episode. He missed the court date, because he was so out of it, so I'm pretty sure there's a warrant out there for him. He's had contact with law enforcement a few times since then, and they've looked for warrants and not found them, but I know it's there because my ex-BIL is a cop in another town in the same county, and he heard it announced. There's no way they're just going to forget about a failure to appear on a DUI. So eventually it'll come around and hit him. I think his name must be misspelled or something, because the other times law enforcement looked for warrants he didn't have his driver's license back. I suspect if they run his dl#, they'll find the warrant, and he'll end up in jail. Not a fun way to spend your birthday, and frankly I can't afford to bail him out right now.
